Since joining Fit with Friends in August 2016, Kristen has been a loyal, consistent, energetic point-earner!
Kristen is a mother, teacher, and friend. A woman of many talents, Kristen speaks Spanish, is an organizational queen, and danced with the Dayton Ballet and Washington Ballet. While she is energetic and outgoing, Kristen also enjoys reading, sewing, and knitting!
In the fitness world, Kristen loves to challenge herself through group fitness classes, especially athletic conditioning. She still loves dancing and currently dances with a local flamenco group, Toma Que Toma. Though she used to hate running, with the help of headphones and a good Pandora station she now loves it!
Since 2010, Kristen successfully trained for and ran five half marathons. The Fit with Friend-ers were thrilled to cheer her on when she sped through her first full marathon in a time of four hours and 20 minutes at Disney World this past January!
As a 12 month Fit with Friend-er, there are many tips we can learn from her! Kristen says “With so many different health fads, plans and ‘diets’ popularized and pushed on us, I have come to take them all with a grain of salt. What I’ve taken from them is that it’s just better to eat real food. The less it’s been manipulated before getting to my fridge, the better. Whole milk, real butter, real sugar, etc.”
Kristen explains how she notices a difference when eating less processed foods. “I like to cook with real ingredients and I feel like the body says “Thank You” every time.”
“I know everyone’s body is unique and that preferences change over time. I was a vegetarian for years and now am an avid meat lover.” One thing that we love about Kristen is how she realizes the uniqueness of everyone’s health journey. She says “ I know that everyone’s health circumstances are different, so we all need to do what’s right for us, but the more natural – less prepackaged – the better it will be for us, for our bodies, our local farmers, sustainable communities, etc.”
Kristen says she loves the Fit with Friends sense of community! She describes it as “a nonjudgemental, supportive community of people choosing to make a conscious effort to focus on improving their overall health. That sense of collective helps me as an individual stay focused and motivated when I am feeling discouraged, tired, lazy, etc.”
We would argue that Kristen’s positive presence is an instrumental part of our Fit with Friends community! Not only did she encourage her teenage daughter to earn points with Fit with Friends, but she also inspired many co-workers to give it a try. She continually encourages all teammates and competitors towards their goals.
Fit with Friends works for Kristen because it can fit in her busy life. She says “I love that it honors different lifestyles and allows participants to engage actively regardless of where they live, if they have a gym membership, etc.” As a mom of two teens and an elementary school teacher, she needs something that can plug into her lifestyle.
Kristen is motivated by the healthy competition but says Fit with Friends “doesn’t ask you to be ‘the best’, but encourages you to be ‘your best’. It allows each team member to shine by highlighting and valuing the different ways that one can improve health. What can I say…I’m a fan!”
And we’re a fan of you, Kristen! In just one year of Fit with Friends, she ran over 500 miles and completed over 2,300 pushups! We can’t wait to see what else she accomplishes and cheer her on through her health journey!
