When I lived in Atlanta, I made a friend named David. He was so helpful to me in so many ways that I told him, as a Personal Trainer and Fitness Instructor, I would be happy to return his kindness and help him with any fitness plans, programs or workouts he wanted.
Well, David inconveniently waited until I moved away from Atlanta to finally ask for help. In October of 2015, he called me and we chatted for a little while about his goals, fitness routines and how he was motivated. I mulled over it for a day or two and came up with a solution.
Because I was in Albuquerque and he was in Atlanta, and I wasn’t going to miss out on fitness fun, I created a shared Google Spreadsheet for fitness tracking. On this spreadsheet, I gave point values to different types of exercises.
We were both training for running races, so there was an emphasis on running. Each mile you ran was worth 3 points, each squat rep was worth 1 point, each minute of core was worth 1 point, and so on. Taking what I learned about excel in high school math, I tricked out the spreadsheet so that all we had to do was enter in what we did each day and then it spit points back out at us.
Not long into this spreadsheet competition, we realized that Google Spreadsheets has a nifty little comment button that we could use to encourage each other… ok honestly, trash talk each other.
Within the spreadsheet there was an opportunity to connect over the fitness we were doing, even on opposite sides of the country.
This competition lasted for about a month and it was all fun and games, then it kind of drifted off. We both got busy, our races were over and some of us were moving across the country again.
December came around and both of us seriously needed to kickstart our fitness and we knew this was the only way.
A brainstorming session ensued, and we invited many, many friends to join the competition. In January, 15 people participated in “Get Fit 2016”.
Since January, Get Fit has morphed into Fit with Friends and so much more. Each month there are improvements, tweaks and changes to make a challenge that motivates and encourages everyone!
Over the next few months, and hopefully years, Fit with Friends will see some dramatic changes as we get ready to scale it for more participants and motivate people all over to join our connected, engaged and active community.
